NAB 2019

WELCOME to NAB 2019!

This year is shaping up to be a year of exciting new products at NAB. In this pre-NAB email, some of our sponsors provide a pre-NAB message and hints about what you will find at their booths. PERG events would not be possible without the support of these companies.

On Tuesday evening, PERG is delighted to host a panel discussion with NETFLIX. It is a sold-out event. If you are a PERG member and did not get tickets, or if you are a rental house interested in PERG membership, please contact harry.box@esta.org.

As always the event begins at 4pm with refreshments and camaraderie in the Atrium area of the Embassy Suites Hotel. The Panel Discussion begins at 5:20 in the Chancellor Ballroom. The event will be shot on video and made available for later viewing for PERG members.

Evolving Worlds of Production and Post
The panel will discuss evolving technology: work methods, creative choice, and questions for cinematographers in the era of HDR and 4k+ formats and the implications for rental houses providing production support.

Panelists (in alphabetical order)
Michael Cioni – Senior VP of Innovation, Panavision
Erik Messerschmidt – DP, Mindhunter
Kate Morrison-Lyons – NETFLIX Production Technology Team
Kees Van Oostrum - DP and President of the ASC

Taylor & Taylor Associates

Would you pack and deliver your most valuable personal property to an unknown person to hold onto? Of course not. Yet that is exactly what happens each time a motion picture rental company does business with a new customer. It is incumbent on each Rental House to verify the identity of its customers by means of industry referrals and credit references. The fact that your customer is able to obtain equipment insurance should not be a substitute for the Rental Company performing their own due diligence to make sure they know who they are doing business with.

Taylor & Taylor tends to limit our sales of short term equipment insurance to people or companies renting from rental houses that we insure, or to customers referred to us by production companies with whom we do business. We see ourselves as supporting those folks who are doing business with our customers and doing projects that are of a personal nature to the artist. As such, we carefully vet the people to whom we sell short term equipment insurance. To date we have only had one experience where we sold a short term equipment policy to a person who ended up not returning the equipment to a rental house (we relaxed our underwriting in this instance because the rental house verified to us that the person was known to their company). Our record is very good because we do not make it easy to obtain the short term policy by asking for a fair amount of underwriting information, and we require that the rental house staff participate in the verification of the potential customer's identity.

If you go onto the RENTAL GUARD website you can see that there has been a frequency of “not returned to the Rental Company” claims reported over the years and it is our goal to try to help minimize these types of thefts if at all possible. Taylor & Taylor would like to wish PERG members a successful NAB and thank our customers for their business over these many years.

The Camera Division

"The Camera Division is celebrating its second birthday! It's hard to believe it has been 24 months since the merger of The Camera House and Division Camera. In that time, we have made great strides into the world of television, taking care of over a dozen series each year.

3D Printing and CNC Manufacturing by TCD has been one of this season's greatest hits! DPs and ACs now come to TCD not just to rent and prep cameras, but for custom-designed, one-of-a-kind camera accessories made especially for them. We have expanded our inventory of Hudson, Litegear, and Astera specialty LED lighting, as well.

From digital prep floor experience to in-house kitchen, TCD's aim is to make our house a home away from home for all who walk through our doors. Our overall mission is a simple one: to provide productions of any size with the best possible camera rental experience."

Vitec Group

At the 2019 NAB Show, Anton/Bauer, Litepanels, and Sachtler will introduce innovative new solutions on the Vitec Group stand, C5725.

Light it up with the industry’s most accurate RGBWW light: Following the introduction of the widely successful Gemini 2x1, Litepanels will debut Gemini 1x1 Soft, an all-in-one, cine-quality light that is easy to transport, rig, and adapt to on-location shooting environments. As a true RGBWW soft panel, Gemini 1x1 Soft offers full-spectrum colour adjustment, at a remarkable price point and in an incredibly versatile, easy-to-control package. Gemini 1x1 Soft is ideal for lighting talent and rendering skin tones, enabling users to match a broad range of ambient lighting conditions quickly and easily. In addition, Gemini 1x1 Soft provides an extensive choice of control options with intuitive onboard controls as well as remote control through wired or wireless DMX or Bluetooth. In an instant, users can switch the light from AC power to battery operation, and the small, lightweight power supply makes the LED fast and easy to rig. The light delivers flicker-free performance at any frame rate, shutter angle, or intensity, with smooth dimming from 100 percent to .1 percent.

Power your story with Titon: Anton/Bauer will unveil the new Titon battery, designed to power a wide range of ENG, DSLR and cine style cameras as well as today’s most advanced LED panels – such as Litepanels’ Gemini 1x1. Through Gold-Mount® or V-Mount as well as P-TAP and high-speed USB, the batteries can also power accessories such as wireless transmitters, follow-focus, lens controllers, monitors, cell phones, tablets, and more. Titon batteries are ideal for broadcast, ENG, and on- location settings where portable power is preferred over mains power to facilitate faster setups. Mobile power is especially useful in remote environments where outlets or generators are not available. Available in 90 Wh and 150Wh versions for both Gold Mount and V-Mount, each Titon battery includes an LCD screen that shows remaining runtime down to the minute for every camera and accessory being powered. Titon offers one of the widest operating temperature ranges in its class, from -4F to 140F (-20C to 60C).

Revolutionize the way you work: Sachtler and Vinten will showcase the multi-award-winning flowtech tripod, now available in both 75mm and 100mm models. The world’s fastest-deploying tripod features exclusive carbon-fibre technology that makes this groundbreaking tripod extremely durable and lightweight, while offering outstanding torsional stiffness and easy setup within any remote production environment.

“Clearly, Sachtler and Vinten put a lot of thought into the design — they looked at the fundamental ways tripods are used and came up with a solution that greatly improves camera operators’ workflows. It is unusual to see this amount of innovation in one tripod,” says Los Angeles-based freelance cameraman Luke Thomas.

The newest release, flowtech100, is compatible with all 100mm fluid heads and sustains a payload of up to 30 kilograms (66 pounds). Designed to support a wide range of wildlife, commercial, and documentary productions as well as heavy-duty electronic newsgathering (ENG) and electronic field production (EFP), flowtech100 is an ideal companion for digital cinema cameras including ARRI ALEXA Mini, Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro, RED WEAPON, Sony FS7, and more.
