Identity Verification Made Easier (and More Affordable)

 PERG News: March 2026

As rental companies, we all need to grow our customers and that means working with new people. ID verification services can help relieve some of the anxiety about working with new renters (see Koerner Camera’s testimonial below). The problem is that ID verification services can be a significant cost. When you investigate identity verification services, comparing pricings and capabilities is not easy, so we’d like to offer some comparison.

What ESTA Offers
First, what does ESTA offer its members? Members can have their own Plaid dashboard, a premium identity verification service, for a subscription of $500/yr. plus $5 per verification for US IDs. For a typical user that’s a total of $560-$600 per year, for which you could gain several rentals and new regular customers. As a trade association we can leverage our collective buying power to put this service within reach for our members, but we need more companies to take advantage of the offer.

As a trade association we can leverage our collective buying power to put this service within reach for our members, but we need more companies to take advantage of the offer.

How it Compares
Pricing for identity verification services is often unclear and varies widely, with premium options that can cost over $1,000 per month. Pricing is based on many factors and there are many add-ons, so the quoted base rates are probably not what you end up paying. From what we can see, a mid-tier companies like Veriff start at $49/month, IDology is $99/mo + $1/check, Subsum is $150/mo minimum, Persona $250+/mo. For a premium service like Plaid the cost is over 1,000/mo. So, the annual cost for more basic services is typically $600 - $3000 and can be a lot more than that.  ESTA’s offering is a premium-level verification service at a significantly lower cost.

Why Plaid
Many services seem to offer similar sounding features like instant ID verification and live person checks, but their methods vary. Plaid uses authoritative date sources, live selfie check, ID matching, and produces are report that includes verified accounts on social media and other platforms as well as phone and email confirmation. It gives you multiple vectors from which to make a judgement. Plaid has higher, faster, and more accurate pass rates (typically above 90% for digital onboarding) than many of its competitors. The process is fast (only a couple minutes) and easy.

Member Experience
Here’s what one of our members told us about their experience with Plaid.

We’ll admit it—we were hesitant to start using Plaid. We assumed it might be clunky, slow, or annoy customers. Instead, it’s been the complete opposite. Plaid is fast, simple, and surprisingly painless. It also takes the anxiety (and personal onus) out of vetting.

Producers treat it as totally normal—just part of doing business these days. It’s actually helped us say yes to clients we might’ve otherwise passed on. In one case, another rental house couldn’t fully verify a producer and turned them away. Plaid gave us the confidence to move forward, and now that client is a solid, returning customer.

Bottom line: Plaid hasn’t lost us business—it’s helped us gain it, while giving us a lot more peace of mind.

The Importance of Growing PERG’s Fraud-Fighting Network
Ten PERG companies are currently using Plaid. We need at least ten more companies to sign up over the next month or so to reach the break-even point for ESTA. If we cannot reach that goal, ESTA faces a difficult choice, but we feel certain that this member benefit is truly a value to the industry and will gain even greater value the more people that use it. Used in conjunction with RENTAL GUARD, this is an opportunity for PERG members to further strengthen our network for fighting fraud.

You can see what the dashboard looks like and view a demonstration of the identity check process HERE.

To talk to us about it and sign up please email plaid@esta.org.

Identity Verification: More Customers, Minus the Fraudsters

 PERG News: June 2025

ESTA’s Plaid Identity Verification Service is starting to bear fruit. One of our early adopters reported that they were able to verify the identity of a customer who otherwise they might have mistrusted. The person looked somewhat sketchy on paper. Another rental company had called to warn them there was a suspicious out-of-town renter looking for a last-minute Sony package. The renter did not have a great website or references. They were renting on a Friday. These are all well-known red flags for a rental company. Without further confirmation that the customer was who they said they were, the rental company would have turned down the rental. Instead, they ran the customer through ESTA’s Plaid Identity Verification.

The customer was completely cooperative with the identity check and did not bat an eye about having to fill in the information on their phone and provide a photo of their ID and take a selfie for Plaid. Within minutes Plaid had unearthed information about the person and confirmed his identity, address, phone number, email address, and social media accounts. On that basis the rental company felt comfortable making the rental, and all turned out well. The rental company made a new customer instead of discouraging the client from using a professional rental company.

ESTA can offer Plaid services to our members at extremely reasonable cost. The service, which would normally cost around $12,000 for a company, is available for ESTA members for $500 per year, plus a nominal charge per verification. One rental more than justifies the investment. Having the service gives your staff a uniform set of criteria for evaluating new clients from hard data.

PERG Launches EWI Coffee-Break Series

 PERG News: August 2024

The first two EWI Coffee Breaks are now available strictly for PERG members. Links were emailed to member companies last week. Feel free to email perg@esta.org if you missed the email and want access. If you would like invitations for future sessions sent directly to your email address, please sign up HERE (exclusively for PERG members).

The sessions are part of PERG's Equitable Workforce Initiative, sponsored by Netflix. These unique virtual sessions are intended as a resource for mentoring rental employees and providing professional development opportunities. The first two sessions are under the title Running a Successful Rental Company. They provide a 360-degree perspective on what we do, and the vital role of your professional rental company in your community's production ecosystem.

In Part I, The Client Experience, EWI Coordinator, Alison Cupples, moderates a panel of veteran rental house principals to explore the seven phases of the client's experience from the initial request for a quote through the final invoicing stage. In Part II, The Equipment Life Cycle, the panel discuss the life cycle of the equipment from the purchasing decision to retirement or sale. The panelists were terrific—thorough and insightful. They include Michael Koerner (Koerner Camera Systems), Anna Mayo (MP&E), Sam Gordon and Ryan  Halsey (Serious Grippage & Light Co.) and Hans Gelpke (Lux Lighting). We are extremely grateful for their invaluable participation in the EWI Coffee Breaks. The sessions are one-of-a-kind inside look at the inner workings of a rental company.

If I had to pick just two themes that emerge from the combined 150 minutes of discussion, they are 1) appreciating the critical role of professional rental companies within the production community, and 2) the challenge of managing expectations and sustaining positive relationships with clients through a process that riddled with potential opportunities for conflict.

We are interested in your candid feedback and ideas and inspiration for future coffee breaks. Please reach out to perg@esta.org.

New Member Spotlight – DFI Rentals

 | PERG News: August 2024 |

DFI Rentals started as a production company called “DFI Studio,” based in Downtown Los Angeles. Tony Huang started the company with a couple of friends while attending USC Film School. “At the time, we owned a lot of equipment and found that a lot of our peers and other production companies asked us to rent our equipment for their shoots. As we started to get more and more requests, we decided to pivot into doing cinema equipment rentals.” The company is currently owned by Tony Huang and Connor Hu.

DFI primarily services small to mid-size productions including narrative shorts, indie features, commercials, music videos, documentaries, and events. The company also services foreign productions filming in Los Angeles.

For Tony the thing that sets DFI apart is the customer experience they have created with the next generation of filmmakers in mind. “From the very beginning, we’ve asked ourselves — what are the instructions that everyone else follows, and how can we break free from them? This is the founding principle we’ve build our production company with, and it continues today into our production rentals service.”

Tony and Connor sought to streamline the film equipment rental process, which they felt can be difficult, unapproachable, and extremely time consuming. “It doesn’t need to be this way. We chose not to follow the instructions; or in other words, the traditional difficulties of equipment rentals. We said goodbye to quotes/invoices/back & forth emails, empowering our users to manage their orders from start to finish online.

Because we had a tight launch deadline for our new rental facility last year in June, we built our entire office in just under 16 days. The company is located in Downtown Los Angeles, about 5 minutes away from USC. DFI has five full prep bays, two checkout and returns stations, two state-of-the-art quality control bays, in a facility that is over 4500 square feet. DFI now has six staff members who are capable of handling everything from customer support, order fulfillment, accounting, quality control, and other technical roles.

“Our goal is to rethink the future of equipment rentals, making the experience as seamless and simple for our customers as possible, while keeping the safeguards that are needed to ensure the quality and safety of our equipment.”

PERG Rental Works User Group Meetings

 PERG News: August 2024

Next meeting: Tuesday August 20, 10 am PT, 11 am, MT, 12 pm CT, and 1 pm ET.

PERG continues to host User Group meetings in which individuals who use Rental Works have an opportunity to discuss implementation of the software and how it dovetails with their sales and operations procedures. Melissa Guzman, Implementation Manager at Rental Works, guides users, sharing the training sandbox so she can easily demonstrate the functions that are raised in discussion by the group. The sessions are well attended and have proved to be a great way to get questions answered, hear how other people deal with issues, hone your rental company processes, and even offer feedback to Rental Works.

Please note that this initiative is not an endorsement or promotion of any vendor by PERG. PERG facilitates the user groups in response to requests from PERG members. Each rental software has different existing support networks and user needs. Please contact the PERG Manager if you are interested in forming a user group for other rental software.

Is Your Rental Company Hiring? Consider EWI

 PERG News: August 2024

As more jobs come back online in late summer and early fall, we anticipate many rental companies will be thinking about increasing their staffing to pre-strike levels. PERG’s Equitable Workforce Initiative provides a grant that covers all costs for the first six months of employment—salary and benefits—for eligible entry-level new hires up to a cap. Rental companies who participate in the program will take on responsibility for providing trainees with a broad industry perspective, documented training, and mentorship intended to inspire long-term interest and spark a career.

The Program is available to all PERG-member rental companies. There are five grants currently available that will be awarded on a first-come-first-served basis to five rental companies when they identify and hire an eligible applicant. Before you start the search for an employee, complete a simple application form with your job listing. You hire the employee who best suits your needs. Eligible job seekers also complete an application with EWI prior to hire. You are under no obligation prior to hiring the EWI trainee.
Find out more HERE, and contact program coordinator, Alison Cupples, at perg@esta.org.

Last Call for NATEAC 2024 Proposals

 PERG News: January 2024

Public-facing buildings should welcome the public. In any solution that we create for these spaces, we need to ask ourselves, “Are all welcome here?” Have we created obstacles that will bar patrons or workers from fully utilizing these buildings? Sometimes these obstacles are physical, like a single step that doesn’t even register for some but is a sign to others that they weren’t intended to be there. Sometimes the impediment is emotional, like when the 98-year-old cabaret in your historic Black neighborhood is renovated into a space that is otherwise unrecognizable except the historic façade, weirdly taken out of place without moving at all. Perhaps the obstacles are economic, like when the chosen site has no safe public transportation nearby.

In our endeavor to create spaces to incite public discourse, celebrate our cultures, tell the greatest human stories, feel music, experience bodies moving in space, and bring people together … we can tear people apart. At NATEAC, our challenge this year is to use our creative voices to help each other understand what it means to belong in these facilities so that we stop looking at accessibility as a code obligation and rather look at access to art as the point of the endeavor.

To that end, we are opening our request for proposals one more time for sessions that speak to one or more of the following topics:
 • Disabling People – Understanding how the built environment creates physical obstacles and how to remove them from the design at every stage.
 • Building Advocacy – What does it mean to be an advocate for belonging in an Architecture, Engineering, and Construction context?
 • Supporting Communities – Breaking the pattern that the proscenium is the “main” stage, and the black box can support “everything else.” Every culture deserves an appropriate venue to tell their stories in their own unique way.
 • Communication – Involving everyone in the conversations in the theatre, in the environment, and in the planning meetings.
Thank you to everyone who has submitted proposals so far. We have a great selection of topics and presenters and will be assembling the programming this month. Additional proposals will be considered as they are submitted, so the sooner, the better. Submit your proposal at esta.org/rfp.

The submission portal for NATEAC 2024 will close again for the last time on January 31st.

Filmscape Technical Videos and Product Overviews

 PERG News: August 2023

The PERG Council and ESTA Board of Directors

 PERG News: January 2023

The PERG Council chair position changes hands each year to a new person on the Council. For 2023, the Council voted Andy Shipsides (ARRI Rental) to take the position. He will take it over from Stosh Durbacz (Fujifilm) who held the position in 2022. Bianca Halpern (BECiNE) accepted the nomination as chair elect. She will take the position in 2024.

Andy Shipsides, the 2023 PERG Chair is President – North America at ARRI Rental.

The PERG Council is the volunteer advisory body that decides the direction of the PERG group and represents PERG members’ concerns and desires in Council meetings. The PERG Council is responsible for developing our events, meetings, and initiatives.

The PERG Council is different from the ESTA Board of Directors, who govern the overall international trade association and are elected to office by the entire ESTA voting membership. The Rental Company Director, currently Mark Wofford (PC&E), is the representative for rental companies on the ESTA Board of Directors. The PERG Council runs events and initiatives for the motion picture/TV/commercial markets, which is a special interest group within ESTA.

(Left) Mark Wofford (PC&E), Rental Company Director on the ESTA Board,
with Gary Paz and Alan Ipakchian at a PERG event.

Council members are appointed in accordance with PERG’s Rules of Governance. At any given time, there are at least 9, and as many as 17, Council members. Seeking to maintain a balance of individuals committed to furthering the goals of PERG, the Council considers the following when adding new members:

 • Geographic diversity of members
 • Balanced representation of both camera and lighting companies
 • Gender and age diversity
 • Candidate’s ability to commit to attending meetings and other PERG events
 • Candidate’s decision-making authority within their organizations. They must be able to express opinions and vote in Council meetings without higher authorization from someone in their company.
 • Candidate’s willingness to serve on task groups.

If an eligible person working for a PERG-affiliated member of ESTA is interested in serving on the Council, they are encouraged to speak with a Council member or the PERG Manager. The term of office for the Council is three years, with an option to continue after that time. During the pandemic, the Council switched to holding monthly Zoom meetings, eliminating the travel requirement for Council members. Being on the Council is an opportunity to give back, make friends, have a front row seat, and make a difference to the industry. Help spearhead action on issues that are important to everyone. Make a lot of new professional connections and have fun!

That said, members do not have to be on the Council in order to take an active role in our events, initiatives, outreach efforts, and committees. To find out how to get more involved, please speak to the PERG Manager or a member of the council.

Who are these wonderful people we call the PERG Council?

 • Carly Barber, Illumination Dynamics, Los Angeles
 • John Cini, High Output, Boston
 • Stosh Durbacz, Fujinon, Toronto
 • Bianca Halpern, BECiNE, Los Angeles
 • Derek Hammer, Hammer Lighting and Grip ,Indianapolis
 • Chris Konash, Panavision, New York
 • Anna Mayo, MP&E, Dallas
 • JR Reid, JR Lighting, Inc., Las Vegas
 • Paul Royalty, LiteGear, Inc., Burbank
 • Andy Shipsides (Chair), ARRI Rental ,New York
 • Sally Spaderna, Koerner Camera, Seattle/Portland
 • Scott Taylor, Taylor & Taylor Associates, New York

The election result for ESTA’s 2023 Board of Directors were announced in December. Incumbent Todd Spencer of Ventana Capital Investments will return as President, and incumbent Joe Aldridge will return as Individual Director. Hannah R. D’Amico of IATSE has been elected as the new Organizational Director. She will succeed Alan M. Rowe, who reached his term limit. Rowe has been a member of the ESTA Board of Directors since 2017. He will continue his work as Co-Chair of the Technical Standards Council and the Subject Matter Expert Chair for Electrical Skills on the ETCP Council. Rental Company Director will remain in the hands of former PERG Council member Mark Wofford (PC&E)

PERG Equitable Workforce Task Group

 PERG News: April 2022

PERG General Membership Meeting at NAB

In 2021 NETFLIX released a first-of-its-kind diversity study of its movies and TV shows, looking at the representation of women, minority groups, and ethnicities on the screen and behind the camera in key roles like writer, producer, and director. At the same time, Netflix announced the creation of the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity, committing to invest $100 million over the next five years in organizations that help underrepresented communities find jobs on TV and film. Netflix’s programming over the past several years has demonstrated a strong commitment to making streaming content look a lot more like the real world, and other services like HBO Max and Apple TV are clearly thinking along the same lines. The Netflix Fund for Creative Equity threw down the gauntlet and is hoping it has created an inflection point in our industry’s openness and inclusiveness.

In late 2020, Peter Griese (Specialist, Strategy and Partnerships at Netflix) reached out to ESTA’s Production Equipment Rental Group (PERG). PERG collaborated previously with Netflix’s Michael Keegan (Program Manager, Strategy and Partnerships) when Netflix worked with PERG to generate discussion with the rental community regarding technical delivery requirements (which had raised questions about the types of cameras and lenses that could be used for Netflix shows). The conversation with Peter started with the question: how many PERG member companies are owned and led by people from underrepresented groups? When you think about it, the number is startlingly small. This opened the door to more conversation about workplace equity, about how companies are cultivating the next generation of equipment rental company owners and management, about opportunity and the workforce in general.

In early 2021, PERG formed the Equitable Workforce Initiative (EWI) Task Group, made up of four PERG Council members, Carly Barber (Illumination Dynamics, Los Angeles), John Cini (High Output, Boston), Stosh Durbacz (Fujifilm, Toronto), Sally Spaderna (Koerner Camera, Portland), plus ESTA board member, Mark Wofford (PC&E, Atlanta), plus myself and ESTA Executive Director, Erin Grabe. Working with Peter and the team at Netflix, the task group considered the challenges for rental companies and for the industry.

Rental companies are an important training ground for the industry. For an aspiring camera assistant or lighting technician there is simply no better place to learn the equipment while earning a paycheck—how equipment is properly handled and cared for, how it is safely used and maintained. As much as rental companies hate it when good employees leave to enter the production world, it is an acknowledged reality that rental companies seed the industry. A couple years working for a respected rental company gives a worker the professionalism and depth of knowledge that the industry relies on in gaffers, lighting technicians, focus pullers, camera operators, and directors of photography. It also gives them access to the working technicians who may hire them once they make the leap. The alternative (or concurrent) training ground for many young filmmakers is working on low budget productions, and while any kind of production experience is invaluable, technicians who gain experience solely from that background tend to come into the world of commercials, TV shows, and films with large gaps in their knowledge.

For the right people, working at a rental company is the perfect fit, but rental companies are a door marked “opportunity” that people entering the industry often look right past. They miss that rental companies are vibrant workplaces too. Perhaps, opening this door requires outreach and recruitment beyond the usual kinds of job-listing efforts, especially when it comes to welcoming people from underrepresented groups. For employees who make it their primary focus, rental companies offer opportunity for advancement; steady, good-paying long-term employment; benefits; and reasonable work hours. Historically, rental company leadership has evolved from rank-and-file employees, but rental companies don’t necessarily put special effort into providing rental business training to prepare employees for a career in equipment rental. What would happen if they did? What if it was expressly part of their training to get a broader industry perspective and mentorship that could inspire long-term interest and spark a career?

For the industry overall, the challenge is to create pipelines that improve equity and diversity in the workforce and develop properly trained workers. For rental companies, there is the additional challenge of finding and retaining a quality labor pool and seeding the next generation of rental company management. Could there be synergy here?

PERG’s Equitable Workforce Task Group will be making an exciting announcement at the PERG General Membership Meeting at NAB on April 25th

Made Personnel Changes? You May Need to Update Your RENTAL GUARD and Other Accounts

 PERG News: October 2020

If your company is registered to receive alerts from RENTAL GUARD, and if you receive the PERG Newsletters, and invitations to PERG events, we want to be sure the right people are still receiving those communications. Most companies have had layoffs and personnel changes over the past 8 months, and we are receiving a lot of bounced emails from our communications.

RENTAL GUARD. Your company is permitted to register as many employees as you like for RENTAL GUARD. Some companies choose to have one account and distribute the alerts internally, which is also a great way to handle it. We have deleted a few dozen RENTAL GUARD accounts after receiving bounced emails, so please be sure the right people are registered at you company. Register here.

PERG Newsletters. Please just shoot Harry an email with the email addresses of people you would like to receive PERG’s Newsletters (normally there are seven issues annually). The Newsletters are a great way to stay current on PERG initiatives and topics of interest to PERG members.

Your Main Contact. Most PERG event invitations and other communications are sent to the main contact you provided. If that person may have changed, please go online and edit your account or contact us with an update. We hope to see all our members returning to full staffing soon! Please keep us updated.

ESTA’s Above & Beyond Award Recipients

The Entertainment Services and Technology Association’s (ESTA’s) Technical Standards Program (TSP) is pleased to announce the 2018 recipients of the annual Above & Beyond Awards! These awards are peer to peer, designed to allow Technical Standards Program volunteers to recognize other outstanding volunteers.

The awards celebrate those volunteers that have made a significant contribution or effort that advances the Technical Standards Program. The TSP exists because hundreds of individuals from across the industry volunteer their expertise and significant amounts of time throughout the year to write standards that increase safety, provide interoperability between different manufacturers, solve problems, and make life easier. These awards are particularly meaningful to the recipients because the nominations are made by their peers within the Technical Standards Program.

The 2018 Above & Beyond Awards are presented to:

Sam Kearney (Control Protocols Working Group) was cited for having been “dropped into the E1.33 task group and immediately started pulling more than his fair share of the weight. Sam continued to pull the entire task group and document forward. He even brought the first wide reaching implementation of the standard to the Plugfest! He's a joy to work with and truly believes in building consensus, even when he disagrees.”

Art Wanuch (Electrical Power Working Group) was cited for having “been a strong, supportive and tireless leader in the development of the single-conductor feeder cable standard, keeping focus on the objective of the creation of this standard over an exceptional number of public reviews while guiding the task group to respond appropriately and substantively to all raised objections.” Art currently serves as the chair of EESA, the Entertainment Electrical Safety Association, in Canada.

Steve Serafin (Floors Working Group) was cited for having been “instrumental in developing ANSI E1.60, Guidelines for the Use of Raked Stages in Live Performance Environments. This standard provides guidance for the use of raked stages in live performance environments to mitigate the risks for the protection of actors and technicians.” Steve took on a considerable role in moving the task group forward, producing a quality American National Standard in almost record time. Steve is a Product Liability Specialist for Chubb Group of Insurance.

Keith Sklar (Floors Working Group) was also cited for having been “instrumental in developing ANSI E1.60, Guidelines for the Use of Raked Stages in Live Performance Environments. Keith went above and beyond to bring years of experience and knowledge to the creation of a standards document that will help protect performers and technicians working on raked stages. Keith’s willingness to jump into the world of drafting technical standards concurrent with his role as a Business Representative at Actors’ Equity Association is exemplary.

Elmer Veith (Rigging Working Group) was also cited for “pushing standards into completion in a very short time, organizing his task groups, and attending just about every single meeting. Elmer is extremely knowledgeable in the rigging field, especially truss and hoists, and he uses that expertise to create thorough and complete standards.”

ESTA’s Technical Standards Program is the only ANSI-accredited standards program dedicated to the needs of the entertainment technology industry. The standards created under the TSP are used directly or indirectly every day by almost every manufacturer, dealer, installer, production company and end user. These standards prevent accidents, protect lives and property, save time and money, solve problems, inform the industry, and enhance creativity.

The TSP is comprised of over 350 volunteer experts who devote time and knowledge to drafting American National Standards for the benefit of the whole entertainment technology industry. The TSP is always interested in any new member who wishes to join a working group. Information on getting involved with the TSP may be found at http://tsp.esta.org/getinvolved.
