EWI Candidates Turn Learned Skills into New Careers

Deadline for 2024 EWI Grants
Rental companies wishing to participate in the 2024 PERG EWI program are coming up on the final deadline. Grants will only be available for a few more weeks, until November 29th. Companies are urged to apply by completing a simple online form during the next two weeks. Completing the application does not commit you to anything, it is just a necessary preliminary step to get you in the system and, if you want, it can bring EWI Program resources to aid in finding you a suitable new employee.
Despite slow business, the 2024 EWI Program has been successful in its mission of helping rental companies to hire and train people from diverse backgrounds. The PERG program, which is sponsored by Netflix, pays all employee salary and payroll expenses for the first six months of employment. Participating companies provide the trainees with a diverse range of experiences, working and observing how rental companies serve clients.
So far this year, four rental companies have stepped up to partner in EWI, ARRI (LA), Becine (LA), Lux Lighting (New York), and Serious Grippage (Albuquerque). At the outset of their employment, trainees are asked to set specific goals for technical skills, soft skills, and networking and define how they will know when they have achieved those goals. As some of our candidates hit their halfway point, they have been hitting many of the goals they set at the beginning and are setting new goals. EWI Coordinator, Alison Cupples, reflects that “watching these candidates achieve their goals ahead of schedule and grow into integral parts of their team at each rental house has been incredibly rewarding. Our industry is built on mentorship and networking which are pillars of the EWI program. Only 3 months in our candidates are connecting with local union leaders, filmmakers, and gaining insight into how and why decisions are made at rental houses and on set.” As our candidates get involved with planning industry events at their rental houses they see the importance of the rental company’s role within the production community. The new employees have shown that they care about their work and are finding it rewarding to work with their teams.
All the participating companies are very happy with their hires. Trainees report gains weekly. For example, one trainee reported paying attention to the detail of client preferences and understanding how it affects their job. Another trainee prepped a truck for a rental and had the opportunity to jump on set with the same truck the next day giving her hands on experience with exactly why items should be packed in a certain way. Another trainee reports learning all about subrentals one week. She has gotten so good with the gear menus and accessories that she familiarizes other employees and has been assigned the task of processing newly acquired gear into their inventory system, which involves problem solving and reallocating warehouse space. In addition to the valuable experiences at their respective rental houses, the candidates have the opportunity to learn about a new camera in a PERG EWI Coffee Break hosted by Sony, and its specific place in the market. (PERG has hosted seven EWI Coffee Breaks so far with more to come. See EWI Coffee Breaks elsewhere in this Newsletter).
The program launched at NAB in April. Eight grants allocated for EWI 2024, four or which have been awarded. The lack of production has made it difficult for many companies to think about hiring. Consequently, four grants remain available to PERG members as the award period reaches its end. Companies can still take advantage of the program companies if they move quickly and get their application completed within the next couple weeks and work to hire before December.

PERG Launches EWI Coffee-Break Series
The first two EWI Coffee Breaks are now available strictly for PERG members. Links were emailed to member companies last week. Feel free to email perg@esta.org if you missed the email and want access. If you would like invitations for future sessions sent directly to your email address, please sign up HERE (exclusively for PERG members).
The sessions are part of PERG's Equitable Workforce Initiative, sponsored by Netflix. These unique virtual sessions are intended as a resource for mentoring rental employees and providing professional development opportunities. The first two sessions are under the title Running a Successful Rental Company. They provide a 360-degree perspective on what we do, and the vital role of your professional rental company in your community's production ecosystem.
In Part I, The Client Experience, EWI Coordinator, Alison Cupples, moderates a panel of veteran rental house principals to explore the seven phases of the client's experience from the initial request for a quote through the final invoicing stage. In Part II, The Equipment Life Cycle, the panel discuss the life cycle of the equipment from the purchasing decision to retirement or sale. The panelists were terrific—thorough and insightful. They include Michael Koerner (Koerner Camera Systems), Anna Mayo (MP&E), Sam Gordon and Ryan Halsey (Serious Grippage & Light Co.) and Hans Gelpke (Lux Lighting). We are extremely grateful for their invaluable participation in the EWI Coffee Breaks. The sessions are one-of-a-kind inside look at the inner workings of a rental company.
If I had to pick just two themes that emerge from the combined 150 minutes of discussion, they are 1) appreciating the critical role of professional rental companies within the production community, and 2) the challenge of managing expectations and sustaining positive relationships with clients through a process that riddled with potential opportunities for conflict.
We are interested in your candid feedback and ideas and inspiration for future coffee breaks. Please reach out to perg@esta.org.
Upcoming EWI Coffee Breaks
August 13, Top Things to Know about Sony Cinema Cameras.
On YouTube, search “PERG Coffee Breaks” to access the playlist.
In this session, Sony Master Trainer and DP Katie Eleneke and award-winning Director of Photography Michael Pessah, ASC, present a practical orientation and demonstration of Sony digital cinema cameras. Eleneke will demonstrate Sony’s Cinema Line, while Pessah will provide practical examples of how he uses their features and his experiences. The presenters will also discuss the important role rental companies have in supporting productions and their crews.
This training is great for all levels of rental professionals – from entry level to professional and will enable a deeper understanding of why cameras have certain features, and how cinematographers and camera assistants harness camera functions to deliver stunning visuals.
September 9, The Role of the Lens Technician.
Matthew Duclos (Duclos Lenses) discusses the craft of the lens service technician. Our industry needs more trained lens technicians and there is no one better suited to tell us about that journey than Matt. Duclos Lenses is a preeminent independent lens service center in the US.

Basic Training for Entry-Level Rental Employees
When an entry-level employee starts work at a rental company, so much of the knowledge and skill essential to the smooth running of the operation is learned via on-the-job training. By “training” I don’t mean that you go in a classroom and someone says, “let’s go over this organizational diagram together so you understand what everyone does here,” or “I’m going to present to you a three-part lecture on how to design an Ethernet network for lighting,” or “I’m going to show you a power point on how to prep a multi-camera package.” More often, people first learn necessary skills informally by being assigned a job that is adjacent to someone else who has experience, watching and gleaning the knowledge by whatever the person will tell them, and by osmosis. A new employee has virtually no visibility into the bigger picture. When I worked for a lighting rental company in Chicago, fresh out of film school, I was completely unaware of what went on outside my own department. PERG’s EWI Program offers an opportunity to develop resources that all members can take advantage of, to give new employees a broader view of our industry and technology.
PERG’s 2024 EWI Coordinator, Alison Cupples, has a lot of experience mentoring young people, serving as a board member for Women in Film, New England. She also knows rental, having worked for 15 years as a Sales Account manager, and managing a branch office at High Output in Boston. As part of managing PERG’s Equitable Workforce Initiative, Alison will be working with PERG members to develop virtual training sessions that will be of universal interest to rental companies for their new employees. All PERG members will be notified when training sessions are scheduled, just as PERG has done with its popular Coffee Breaks, and employees from any member company are welcome to join the sessions.
One of the first sessions Alison is working on takes a 30,000-foot view of the landscape of a rental house. Trainees will hear from veteran rental owners and managers about the staff roles including the salesperson—the client liaison, translating the client’s needs into operational duties, acting as a consult as much as taking the client’s order, shop management, inventory management, accounting, marketing, and so on. Trainees will have an inside look at the rental company’s important relationships with the equipment manufacturers. By inviting the trainees to think about the bigger project of supporting productions, and everything that goes into it, the EWI program aims to help our members shape more informed, more valuable employees, and to spark an interest in rental as a long-term career.
Other EWI educational sessions will also focus on modern cinema technology. PERG is working with manufacturers to develop educational sessions on a wide variety of basic training, from color theory and lighting control to cameras and lenses to understanding the demands faced by the crew on set, and how the rental company supports them.
Many entry level employees apply for positions at a rental company because it is somewhere they can gain skills and knowledge about the equipment. Even someone with a college degree in filmmaking has not necessarily had much exposure to professional level equipment and filmmaking techniques. When I was in my twenties, entering the industry, the most knowledgeable and professional camera assistants I knew, who were young like me, had worked for a year or two at Panavision or one of the other respected rental companies. That was a real leg up. Working day in and day out with the equipment and servicing the 1st ACs who came in to prep their cameras, an entry-level person was soon set straight on the correct way to handle precious items and the experience vastly expanded their knowledge of the wide array of specialized equipment one must know to work in the industry.
The PERG EWI program, which is sponsored by Netflix, creates opportunities for people from underrepresented groups who have a strong desire the enter the motion picture/television industry. The 2024 program is currently accepting applications from rental companies that have positions to fill and from job seekers. The program reimburses the rental companies for all costs of wages and benefits for the first six months of employment. In exchange, the rental companies that volunteer to participate in the program provide the worker with a wide variety of training and experience and give the employee the 30,000-foot view of the rental industry that they need. PERG Equitable Workforce Initiative 2024 to Launch at NAB
Thursday, February 23, 2023
EWI Update
Are you looking to hire an entry-level employee? Consider participating in PERG’s Equitable Workforce Initiative and receiving a grant that pays their salary for the first six months of their employment. Andrew Rodriguez, the Program Coordinator for is working hard to pair job seekers with participating rental companies so that we can award the remaining grants. So far, four member companies have made new hires under the program: Lux Lighting, a lighting rental company in New York; Rare Breeds, a boutique camera rental company in Los Angeles; Triode, a full service company providing lighting and camera rental, sound stages, crewing, and production support in Lancaster PA, and Birns & Sawyer, in Los Angeles.
In the 2022-2023 cycle, EWI is budgeted to award eight grants. Rental companies that may be interested should apply immediately. Your application does not commit you to anything, it only gets the ball rolling and posts your job listing. It starts the process of searching for the applicant that you decide to hire. We need your participation to make this program a success.

Industry Experts and Rental Veterans to Provide Seminars for Rental Employees
PERG is gearing up for a new series of virtual educational presentations available to all PERG member companies, specifically targeting employees in the early stages of their career. PERG aims to provide 60-minute virtual sessions every two to three weeks throughout the spring and into the summer of 2023. In each session, industry experts and veteran rental staff will discuss the rental business, production technology, or a related topic essential to running a successful business and supporting the motion picture/television/commercial production markets. The object of the series is to educate and inspire, to pull back the curtain and allow entry-level employees get perspective on the crucial role played by professional rental companies. Mentorship, education, and inspiration can help seed the next generation of leadership in our industry.
The series is presented in association with PERG’s Equitable Workforce Initiative. The initiative, which is sponsored by Netflix, places workers from historically underrepresented groups into full-time entry level positions at PERG rental companies, supported by grants, and provides a structure for providing those employees with unique training opportunities that could spark a long-term commitment and advancement in our section of the industry. The companies that are participating in the EWI have each volunteered to present a topic. In addition, PERG is reaching out to business leaders, industry experts, production managers, DPs, people in crew leadership positions, and professionals in insurance and law to contribute to the series.
An organizational meeting is being held in January, and we hope to release an initial schedule of topics and presenters by the end of January, with the first session premiering in February. The series will be recorded, and the videos will be made available online for PERG members. If you have a topic for discussion, or a speaker to suggest, we’d love the hear from you.
EWI Update
Since the first EWI grant was awarded in October last year, trainees have performed a wide variety of tasks to build their knowledge and give them perspective on the industry. As PERG Manager, it is extremely gratifying to see the program starting to blossom. I knew that our members would step up and bring their own personalities to the challenge, and they have. The opportunities that they have provided for their trainees have been meaningful.
Andrew Rodriguez, the Program Coordinator for PERG’s Equitable Workforce Initiative, has been working hard to pair job seekers with participating rental companies so that we can award the remaining grants. So far, three member companies have made new hires under the program: Lux Lighting, a lighting rental company in New York; Rare Breeds, a boutique camera rental company in Los Angeles; and Triode, a full service company providing lighting and camera rental, sound stages, crewing, and production support in Lancaster PA. At least four other companies are actively looking to hire under EWI. In the 2022-2023 cycle, EWI is budgeted to award eight grants. Rental companies that want to participate this year should apply immediately.
Andrew Rodriguez, EWI Program Coordinator
When I say the trainee’s experiences have been meaningful, here’s what I mean. Trainees are being instructed and performing tasks like stage maintenance, conducting inventory of grip equipment and adding them into rental software systems (including the value of items and their replacement costs), working on social media content, practicing the check in/check out process, learning how to properly QC digital lighting equipment, learning how to pair a Cintenna kit (a wireless DMX lighting control network), setting up and tearing down a Jib and Dana dolly. Trainees have participated in team building events and company social events. All of these opportunities contribute to their perspective on the overall mission of rental companies.
Some employers have found ways to provide production experience. One trainee spent a day assisting setting up a lighting plan based on instructions given. He pulled all equipment needed for a shoot, then assembled and placed the lights. He then assisted on the shoot to see how the lighting levels worked and the image looked based on the position of the lights and their settings. Another day he was given an opportunity to work with the company’s robot operator on filming shots of their own camera equipment for their website. The trainee pulled items based on rental use and value, set them up for filming, and then put them away. Another time he had an opportunity to learn about the role of assistant editor, sequence prepping, and masters.
We look forward to awarding the remaining grants—likely very soon—and launching the EWI Mentor Series (See Industry Experts and Rental Veterans to Provide Seminars for Rental Employees in their Early Career in this issue.) Thanks to Andrew for all his hard work, and to our participating members for their care and inspiration.

PERG EWI Launch
The PERG Equitable Workforce Initiative is delighted to report that the first EWI grant has been awarded. Triode Media Group, based in Lancaster, PA provides trucks, stages, grip, and lighting across Pennsylvania as well as in New York City and the DC metro area. With the EWI in mind, Triode reached out to a local community non-profit group, Community Action Project (CAP). CAP in turn, channeled the request to other local groups, including an online podcasting network called The Cultured Professional Network (TCP). Within days, Triode started receiving resumes and among them found a young person, passionate about technology and media and ready to enter the professional ranks of the higher-end market. Thinking about EWI encouraged the leadership at Triode to look for talent in a new way, and it paid off.
Throughout September, EWI Program Coordinator, Andrew Rodriguez, has been reaching out to community groups and educational institutions to encourage job seekers to apply to the program and upload their resume. It will take some time to populate the EWI candidates on the EWI website, but while that resource is growing, PERG members can also source candidates themselves. If you have an EWI-eligible candidate you’d like to hire, encourage them to apply to EWI and let Andrew know.
Andrew and PERG Manager, Harry Box, will host an informational Coffee Break on Thursday, September 29th at 9 am Pacific time (10 am mountain, 11 am Central, 12 pm Eastern) to discuss details about the EWI Program. If you are interested to learn how to apply, how your training curriculum will be documented, and what else is involved, please register here.
