New Member Spotlight: Triode Media Group

 PERG News: April 2022

In February 2022, PERG welcomed Triode Media Group as a new member of ESTA and PERG. Triode was founded by father and son duo, Peter and Evan Scudner in 2017 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The name Triode was inspired by the original vacuum tube that amplifies audio permitting long-range radio signals. Peter and Evan took the idea to amplify other people’s work and ran with it.

Triode Media Group is a video production studio and rental house. Triode provides insight during pre-production, supplies equipment and crews for production, and delivers editing in post-production projects, all to strengthen creative projects with their resources and abilities.

The team is known for servicing all aspects of the video production process with equipment, space, and crew, joining forces with the client’s team to create a spectacular final product.

Triode is also a proud member of the local film community in Lancaster, PA, collaborating with other video production companies in the area to enhancing their capabilities with equipment and stage spaces.

Triode’s 10,000 square foot studio is one of the largest stages in the area. Their truck, van, and trailers of G&E and Camera equipment are used in stage and on-location. “Our model is to help production companies assemble custom packages for each shoot and staff those with crew as needed,” says Peter.

Triode Studios is one of only 14 Pennsylvania film tax credit qualified production facilities, a designation earned by the size and quality of our facilities and equipment. Centrally located between Philadelphia and Baltimore the Triode stages are perfect for both large and small projects. Says Peter, “Our main stage can accommodate over 100 people and is large enough to drive a truck on stage. It has 100’ of cyclorama, 1000 lb. rigging points and full grid at 20’ and dedicated 400 Amps of power. Our broadcast stage is a pre-configured with broadcast capable technology over 50’ of curved green cyc and full lighting grid. The audio spaces include a live recording space and fully capable mixing suite. All stages are linked with Dante protocols and high-speed fiber. The studio includes spaces to support our clients including green room, dressing room, conference room, kitchen and editing facilities.  We are located just blocks from downtown Lancaster, PA with a diverse selection of restaurants and hotels ideal for longer-term projects.

The Triode production team currently consists of seven exceptional creatives. Peter Scudner founded Triode Media Group with his son, Evan Scudner, who leads our team as the Executive Producer. Executive Administrator, Brigitte Errickson, spearheads the organization of the studio. Brigitte is the stitch that holds the team together and provides amazing insight and support for all projects both big and small.

The Production Manager, Rich Heo, and the Assistant Editor, Nami Heo combine their multifaceted skills to carry-out every step in the video production process. Both Rich and Nami contribute to projects as needed. Individually, Rich coordinates with our clients to gather information for their video concept and sets the project in motion and apply final edits. In addition, Nami contributes his background in digital media arts to apply edits and create graphics necessary to complete each video project.

Bob Byers holds the role of Senior Producer. His capabilities are tailored to video projects in the business-to-business sector. Bob specializes in the manufacturing and construction industries, while making use of our green screen stage to tell his client’s stories.

Triode’s Digital Marketing Specialist, Shannon Reed, handles our digital presence. Some of her responsibilities include, keeping our social media profiles up to date and maintaining our company website.

As a mature business, the focus of Triode Media Group is to amplify our client’s video stories by delivering exceptional service, creative solutions, and collaborative support in the form of equipment, stages, and production support. The equipment and stage rental business is growing as they respond to the needs of production company clients. Looking to the future Peter says, “Our vision is to see Lancaster become a film-making destination.”

Dates Still Available for BTS Mental Health First Aid Training

 PERG News: April 2022

There are still two dates available to take the Mental Health First Aid Training classes in May. Dates are posted on the Behind the Scenes website at btshelp.org/mhfa. “This is like knowing CPR,” says PERG Manager, Harry Box “You could be the person who could save a life if you are suitably prepared for it. I was impressed with the quality and content of the training.” You can make a difference by knowing how to start a conversation with someone you are worried about, how to listen non-judgmentally, and refer them to appropriate support. Upon completing the course, you will become a certified Mental Health First Aider which is valid for three years.

The course is delivered in two parts. The first is a two-hour self-paced online course that must be completed prior to a 6-hour virtual live instructor led session. Go to btshelp.org/mhfa to learn more and to select the date and time you wish to attend the virtual live session.

The registration fee is $125. IATSE Members and those working under IATSE agreements may be eligible for Training Trust Fund reimbursement upon proof of successful completion of the course. A limited number of partial and full scholarships are available to individuals not eligible for reimbursement. Private group classes of 15 - 20 are available – contact mailto:mhfa@btshelp.org for information. Training for Canadians is available through the AFC at https://afchelps.ca/mhfa.

Do you know how to respond if you see someone who is deeply depressed, having an anxiety attack, or showing signs of alcoholism or substance use? Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health or substance use-related issue.

You’ll learn about the risk factors and warning signs of mental health and substance use problems, the 5-step ALGEE action plan to help someone who is developing a problem or is in crisis, and the available professional, peer and self-help resources.

Make 2022 the year you took an active role in helping to care for those you work with. Don’t miss this opportunity to expand your skill sets by learning how to identify, understand and respond to signs of distress in your colleagues and help make our workplaces healthier and safer spaces for all. | PERG News: March 2022 |

The days of Cine Gear being hosted at the iconic Paramount Studios backlot are over. We loved it and its very sad, but our philosophy is that we need to just get over it and not let it ruin the fact that LA still has its own home-grown industry trade show in Cine Gear. PERG will host its Rental House Breakfast in true style, at Tom’s Watch Bar, right across the street and walking distance to the LA Convention Center. A full breakfast, nutritious or decadent; you choose. Come early get easy parking, walk to our event, then join the show when it starts at 10 or continue to hang out—breakfast is 8:30-10:30 am, Saturday June 11th.

PERG Coffee Break: Tracking Devices

 PERG News: March 2022

Many camera and lighting rental companies have wondered about the viability of integrating trackers into high dollar equipment to track equipment in case of theft, to help locate misplaced equipment, or even just to locate items in a large rental facility. On March 1st, in most recent installment of PERG’s virtual Coffee Break series, we invited members to ride along as we went on a fact-finding mission investigating the capabilities and limitations of state-of-the-art Bluetooth tracking technology. Tile's National Sales Manager, Mark Bony, and Senior Director of Hardware Engineering, Muhammad Umair describe powerful developments in tracking devices and possibilities for integration. We invited Tile because they are a well-recognized brand with product in 195 countries and a top seller. We don’t really know yet if Bluetooth or GPS tracking devices might have value for the rental industry, but we do want to stay informed about the pros and cons of this evolving technology. We invited equipment manufacturers and case manufacturers to join the meeting and help inform members on their experiences. Josh Kaye, Innerspace Cases, describes how they have done integrations for customers. PERG Council Member and Rental Manager at Koerner Camera, Sally Spaderna, hosts the PERG Coffee Break.

In a fast-moving presentation, Mark Bony shows the various product form factors, the app, the features, and the short setup process. Among the notable takeaways from the discussion are the following. Although Bluetooth trackers have a limited range, they have distinct advantages over GPS devices. They have a long battery life, three-years for some devices, whereas GPS devices batteries may need to be recharged daily. They can be as small as a sticker. They work as a network so that if they come into proximity with any phone or device that has the Tile app, they will relay their location. With billions of devices sold, Tile has a very high rate of success in locating items via this “crowd-sourced” network. A QR code is printed on the trackers, which gives the finder a direct link to the owner. As many as 250 tracking devices can be associated with an account. Mark points out, you can easily set up multiple accounts and the app can easily jump between them, so it is expandable beyond 250. The limitation may be the processing power of the phone or tablet.

In a recent development, Tile was bought by Life 360, which is an app that uses cell-phone triangulation to share user location with specific people such as family members or company staff. Integration with Life 360 will further enable the finder technology.

We hope you check out the video. Please “like” and subscribe to our channel so you can get notified when PERG and ESTA post new Coffee Break videos.

New Member Spotlight

 PERG News: March 2022

In this issue we are pleased spotlight two new PERG members, both of them manufacturers, Atlas Lens Co., and ASTERA. The Member Spotlight will be a regular feature of the PERG Newsletter, welcoming new members and sharing a little of the interesting histories and insights about the companies.

Atlas Lens Co.

Atlas Lens Co. is a new American lens company focused on making high quality anamorphic lenses for cinematography. The company is helmed by CEO/Product Manager Dan Kanes. Forrest Schultz is the Lead Designer and Scott Dewald is the Chief Optical Engineer. Russell Bell is the company’s VP of Operations. Atlas is known for making high quality, vintage style anamorphic lenses with modern conveniences at a fair market value price. What sets the company apart is that it is owned and run by cinematographers. Kanes says “Our key mission is to make anamorphic cinematography more personal and more accessible to current filmmakers as well as the new generation of filmmakers and content creators!”

Dan Kanes, CEO/Product Manager, Atlas Lens Co.

The Atlas team with hackey sack cake.

Atlas primarily sells lenses to camera rental companies and cinematographers who own their own equipment. Kanes says “Our philosophy of design is primarily user driven, powered by engineering and unconventional attitudes.” The company culture is also probably unconventional for a lens company. “Not everyone knows this, but we like to play hacky-sack for 20 minutes a day, as many days a week as we possibly can.” The company has around 25 employees including engineers, technicians, marketing, and sales. Their team is “very capable, tight-knit and focused on learning and being productive - but also able to have a lot of fun together.”

Atlas Lens Company’s 16,000 sq. ft. custom designed facility also has a quirk. “Our facility where we design, build, and market our lenses is at the intersection of Glendale and Burbank Blvd. Half the building is in Burbank and half is in Glendale.”

ASTERA

ASTERA is a manufacturer of advanced LED lights with a mission to launch smart products that do not exist in the market already and that make the life easier for the users.

ASTERA was founded by Norbert Ernst, a successful serial entrepreneur and skilled engineer. One of the first to see the potential of a battery-powered, remote-controlled RGB LED tube with customizable effects like fire and fade, in 2005 ASTERA’s first tubes that were built into cocktail tables and covered with a stretch fabric. In 2007, Ernst moved to Shenzhen, China where he started a small factory. Originally, ASTERA was an OEM manufacturer but in 2010, after designing and manufacturing for two event companies, it launched its own product line aimed at the event market. Within a short time gaffers took notice of the highly portable and controllable lights, and in 2018 ASTERA designed its first light for the film industry, the highly successful Titan Tube.

ASTERA CEO Norbert Ernst

Today ASTERA manufactures a range of battery-powered, remote-controlled lights for the film/broadcast and stage/event industries. The products contain a lot of features, making them very flexible in use. ASTERA puts special focus on its RGB-mint-amber LED engines, which not only reach a high CRI but also lead to a wide range of white tones and outstanding colors through the spectrum. Colors and effects can be precisely selected via app or wireless DMX.

ASTERA has an office for R&D, marketing, and after-sales in Munich, Germany, an office in Hongkong for international sales, as well as its own factory in Shenzhen, China.

Bystander Intervention in the Entertainment Industry Webinars Announced

Do you know how to safely intervene if you see a co-worker being bullied or intimidated? In only one hour you will learn five easily accessible tools, illustrated by relevant scenarios, for use in any workplace to safely intervene without the worry of retaliation.

The Behind the Scenes Mental Health Initiative is partnering with Hollaback!, a social justice organization that specializes in education around bullying and harassment, to present a one hour webinar “Bystander Intervention in the Entertainment Workplace.” The free webinar will be offered three times to accommodate industry work schedules: Sunday, March 20th at 12pm Eastern, Monday, March 28th at 8pm Eastern, and Sunday April 10th at 3pm Eastern. Principal Hollaback! trainer, Dax Valdes, an experienced entertainment industry professional, will lead these interactive sessions that ensure attendee anonymity.

The webinars are free but advance registration is required in order to receive the zoom login. Please visit btshelp.org/bystander to select a registration link for the date of your choice.

BTS’ 2019 survey strongly indicated that bullying, harassment and intimidation is a common workplace stressor throughout sectors of the entertainment industry. These behaviors create a physically and psychologically unsafe workplace for everyone. This training will teach you how to safely intervene and help to make a difference.

Hollaback!’s goal is to reduce instances of workplace disrespect and harassment by giving individuals the tools they need to disrupt those perpetrating it. You will learn the 5Ds of bystander intervention methodology - distract, delegate, document, delay, and direct. 98% of attendees leave Hollaback! trainings committed to intervening if they witness disrespect or harassment at work.

This webinar is offered as part of an ongoing “Stop Bullying” campaign launched by the Mental Health Initiative in 2021. Available resources include a set of posters to raise awareness of words, actions and behaviors that constitute bullying, harassment or intimidation; information for those who are targets of, or bystanders to, bullying behavior; information to empower individuals to Be Informed, Be Aware, Show Support, and Take Action; and a sample policy and procedures to identify, investigate and resolve instances of bullying, harassment or intimidation and to provide support to those who experience these behaviors.
